“Beware of little expenses. A small leak will sink a great ship.” ~ Benjamin Franklin
Who doesn’t love our most quoted founding father? His quick quips and commonsense sayings…
One of my favorite quotes that I use around our company is “Take care of the pennies and the dollars take care of themselves.” Simple, direct, and understandable. We are a process improvement company, and if we’re going to make recommendations to other organizations, then we better practice what we preach, and we absolutely do. We run lean and mean and don’t waste money. We may splurge on food and drinks after a good week, but I see that as more of an investment; after all, who doesn’t like to celebrate the wins and keep everyone motivated to keep grinding and going back out there for more wins?
Unfortunately, too many C-level and mid-level managers don’t recognize the leaks in their ships. They are unconsciously incompetent—meaning they don’t know what they don’t know. The number one thing to look for when you want to improve processes at your organization is any task that is a heavily manual task. Something that makes you say, “There has to be a better way!”.
I once had a newly elected county official (who came from the business world) call me up and ask me if I would look at a process in their tax department. He simply said, “Watch the process, something is f*&%ed up about it. I don’t know what it is, but I know you will.” I sat with the person running the department, and she agreed with him but didn’t know how to fix it either. After spending two hours with this very competent Director, we identified all of the manual processes and bottlenecks. The answer was building a software solution to streamline everything, eliminate the manual processes, and make the entire task an automated process.
It worked beautifully, and they’ve been using it the last three years. As a matter of fact, now every department within that county uses some piece of our software to eliminate wasted time. Leak fixed, and they’ve saved hundreds of thousands of dollars since they have implemented the solution.
Bottom line is, if you see something in your organization and think there has to be a better way, don’t shrug that feeling off. If you believe a software solution can solve your problem, call us. We specialize in custom process improvement software based on simple business rules to help you save time and money and most importantly to stop the leak!
